Animal Evaluation

Information on this Website

After each Animal Evaluation Run the website is updated with information on;

RANKING OF ACTIVE SIRES

The Ranking of Active Sires (RAS) is a ranking by Breeding Worth of sires nominated by AB Companies.  An active sire is one which is likely to have at least 500 doses of semen available in the following mating season.

New Zealand Animal Evaluation Limited establishes the criteria for eligibility for this List.  These criteria include:

  -
minimum Reliability for PA_PT-Index of 75%
  - at least 10 herds with two-year-old herd tested daughters included in the bull's proof

Sires are ranked both within the main breed categories and across breeds. The report consists of the top 50 Holstein-Friesians, top 30 Jerseys, top 10 Ayrshires, top 5 other breeds, and top 50 across all breeds.

OBTAINING BW AND TOP INFORMATION ON BULLS

A Breeding Worth search can be achieved by entering the breed, bull code, bull name (or part of), BW and/or BW reliability in the appropriate areas.

The bulls available in this search function have to be enrolled for Animal Evaluation, and have

  - BW reliability > 60

  - At least 20 New Zealand daughters

  - At least one 2-year-old daughter milking in the last five years.

To obtain further information on any one bull, select the desired bull. This allows you to view general information about the animal, percent contributions and pedigree information, production Breeding Values and TOP Breeding Values.

Two download files are also available.  These download files include all AE Enrolled sires, regardless of their age, BW Reliability or number of daughters.

Information on Sires can also be obtained by contacting the Animal Evaluation Unit

GRC INDICATOR

A Y in this column means Genotyped animal with Genomic Relationship Coefficients directly incorporated in the evaluation

GENE TESTS

AB organisations have agreed that the following information on genetic defects should be published, and have supplied details for their animals.  While every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of information in this section, no responsibility can be accepted by the Animal Evaluation Unit for any inaccuracies or omissions in the information.

The following tests are reported on the wesbite:

B = Bovine Leucocyte Adhesion Deficiency (BLAD)
C = Citrullinaemia
V = Complex Vertebral Malformation

If a bull has been tested for any of the genes, the appropriate letter will be entered.  Absence of a letter B, C, or V means no test result for Bovine Leucocyte Adhesion Deficiency, Citrullinaemia or Complex Vertebral Malformation has been recorded by the AE Unit.  Results of the test are illustrated by (+) for tested positive (ie the bull carries the gene for that condition) and (-) for tested negative.
